Program(s) accepted:
• PDF is the preferred file format when providing a camera ready ad.
All Creative Suite versions will export a high resolution pdf which is acceptable for reproduction.

Fonts:
Remember to embed all fonts and images in the file when creating the pdf.
For best reproduction in newsprint, all text and reverses should be 100% black only, not a CMYK Black.

Images
B&W • Color (must be CMYK) Please supply TIFF, JPEG or EPS file formats.

Resolution
We use 100 line screen for newsprint and 150 linescreen for our slick products.
Images resolution should be double that: 200dpi for newspaper and 300dpi for slick products.
Type should remain vector if possible. If you must rasterise or flatten type layers please do so at a high
resolution 400-600 dpi. For line art or bitmap images use 600-1200 dpi depending on the quality of the
original.

Adobe Acrobat & PDF:
One of our preferred formats of choice to receive ads is PDF. If distilled correctly, it
significantly increases our ability to produce and output consistent, high quality files.
Please see the pdf below for our distiller settings. To get more information or ask questions
please call 707.526.8630 or email me at

The Press Democrat, which has been awarded the SNAP Certification by the Newspaper Association of America (NAA)
for color reproduction quality, has created a color chart with CMYK separations that reproduce well on newsprint.
To receive actual printed copies of this color chart on newsprint and A080 (bright white newsprint)

    Photoshop Toning tips
The Press Democrat has Photoshop profiles that we recommend for newsprint:
    RGB Profile-ColorMatch RGB,
    CMYK Profile-ISOnewspaper30v4.icc
    Grayscale Profile-Zeitung_QUIZ_28_gr_02.03V3.icc.

These profiles are available by downloading.

      Press Democrat Color Profiles

Drag the profiles into the Profiles folder as shown below.
Create a setting for newsprint following the example shown below and use this setting for converting and toning newsprint photos.

One thing to remember is that newsprint has a 25-35% dot gain in the mid tones, so photos must be toned accordingly.
When toning photos in Photoshop use your info palette and check your numbers.
A properly toned photo for newsprint will appear lighter on your monitor, but will print darker.
Total ink should not be more than 240 total.

Make sure to sharpen your photos using the Filter "Unsharp Mask".
Try this setting shown below as a starting point and decrease the "Amount" as needed.

For more detailed Photoshop toning tips download this pdf.

These dot gain percentages were determined by using a densitometer on newsprint.
